VFKFF LOOK OUT! DISNEY'S GETTING SELFISH! (READ WHY)

Post by PrettyMagicDoll on Mon Jun 30, 2008 3:09 pm

@ Downtown Disney, they're closing down Pleasure Island. im kinda happy and glad they are because of bad drinks (if you know what I mean) and a bad cafe, but poor people who loves it, especially if they dealt with the close off VMK. They don't derserve it! Why? People want more shops and dining stuff.

Shops + dining stuff= $$ a2 affraid I smell something...*smells*Smell that? It smells like a money scheme. Mad

Where will grown-up will get entertained there besides Disney Quest and Circus show? NO WHERE! :(

I'd tell you where i found the article, but im afaird they'd be bad ads, although i haven't seen anything...yet. Confused

First, they're destroying everyone's wishes and dreams online, now they're destroying everyone's wishes and dreams at the Disney Parks! Banghead What's next? Replacing Mickey with Hannah Montana? Confused

Excuse me, not to offend you, but the reason why they're tearing down the nasty PI is because they're putting in the ESPN Zone. It's got more than one story and tons of things for adults and sports fans to enjoy. And don't automattically assume everything Disney does is a money scheme. The entire Disney company is not responisble "destroying everyone's wishes and dreams online".

Eh, I agree with both of you. It probably is a money scheme, yet they are probably putting in ESPN to appeal to more age groups.

Here is the official press release:

"Walt Disney World Resort Unveils Bold New Vision for Downtown Disney
Lake Buena Vista, Florida (June 27, 2008 – Walt Disney World Resort today unveiled a new vision for Downtown Disney, with extraordinary new shopping, dining and other experiences including a completely re-imagined Pleasure Island. Also planned are numerous enhancements to popular Downtown Disney locations, as well as additional theming and storytelling brought to life by Walt Disney Imagineers.
“We are committed to offering guests new and exciting experiences they can only have at Walt Disney World Resort,” said Downtown Disney Vice President Kevin Lansberry. “Our bold new vision for Downtown Disney reflects the feedback we receive from our guests each and every day and will enable us to continue to offer the high-quality entertainment that is our hallmark.”
Over the next year, the 120-acre entertainment-shopping-dining complex will add a number of one-of-a-kind, immersive experiences for guests. Downtown Disney will even get its own iconic attraction, in the form of a giant, tethered balloon that will take guests 300 feet into the air to view the amazing vistas of Walt Disney World Resort. Other new experiences include:

  • In fall 2008, guests will enter a world of prehistoric creatures at T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure. The dinosaur-themed family eatery will serve up pizzas, pastas, seafood and more, and will feature life-size animated dinosaurs that dwell among bubbling geysers, waterfalls and a fossil dig site.
  • Also this fall, a design-your-own t-shirt store from Hanes will add to the growing collection of merchandise guests can personalize at Downtown Disney.
  • E-brands Restaurants, an Orlando-based, multi-concept restaurant group, will premier its newest concept at Downtown Disney in spring 2009. The high-energy, casual eatery will feature authentic Central and South American cuisine, specialty drinks and live music along the waterfront.

Guests also will enjoy a brand new mix of shopping and dining experiences at Pleasure Island as it is transformed over the next two years.
“Our guests tell us they want additional shopping and dining experiences at Downtown Disney,” added Lansberry. “We are currently considering a number of unique concepts from around the globe as we re-imagine Pleasure Island and look forward to sharing our progress over the coming months.”
To make way for the new offerings, all of the clubs currently on Pleasure Island will close on September 27. Other locations on Pleasure Island, including Raglan Road, Fuego by Sosa Cigars, Curl by Sammy Duval, Orlando Harley-Davidson and outdoor food and beverage locations, will remain open during the transition.
To complement these new experiences, many popular Downtown Disney locations will undergo enhancements.

  • Beginning this summer, Portobello Yacht Club will be transformed into a Tuscan Country Trattoria. The refreshed menu features authentic Italian dishes and signature favorites and a re-designed interior along with an outdoor dining space.
  • This fall, Goofy’s Candy Company will add a special new room that will enable families to host one-of-a-kind birthday parties at Downtown Disney.
  • The Marketplace Stage will be completely replaced with a larger, covered stage this fall to welcome even more entertainment to Downtown Disney and serve as a new premier venue for Disney Magic Music Days.
  • Fulton’s Crab House will update its interior fixtures and furnishing and exterior in Spring 2009. The enhancements include a refreshed third floor deck dining area to offer additional Disney guests and larger private parties the traditional Fulton’s experience.
  • Next year, Wolfgang Puck Café will update its interior fixtures and furnishings and will feature an enclosed glass patio offering guests a year-round outdoor dining experience.

These efforts come on the heels of recent enhancements at World of Disney, Wolfgang Puck Express, Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, Earl of Sandwich and Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant."

If you have never been inside PI and all of its clubs then I don't think you should be calling it nasty. It is a great place for teens and adults to have some fun in a safe, Disney atmosphere. There are lots of people who visit Disney who are not families with little kids but are teens/adults there for fun, weddings, work conventions, etc. The clubs are all clean, nicely themed, and follow Disney standards. Over the past recent years Disney has been letting it all fall apart (getting rid off the turnstiles so anyone could walk in, getting rid of the outside stages/dancers/fireworks, etc) so the announcement while a little sad is not a surprise. I think part of this is a bc they couldn't/didn't want to compete with CityWalk at Universal bc that's when PI started really falling apart.
The reason why it is closing IS because of money. Really, people want more shops and restaurants?! Really people want Disney leasing off all that space to outside non-Disney vendors/stores so it will be just like an typical mall?
I agree that the entire Disney company is not responsible for destroying everyone's wishes and dreams but certain parts of the Disney company are (like WDIG for closing VMK). People feel just as strongly about this closing just like most of us did about VMK closing.
Sadly, I think there will be lots more sad announcements made by Disney as things only get worse on closings and changes. Oh Walt come back!

All good things must come to an end. Yes PI is a great place for teens and adults alike, however just look at the vision which is in store for all to enjoy.
I have no clue (because I am blonde) on how to make this thing scroll...LOL Wow I made it work, being blonde is fun after all.

People, you need to realize that Disney is a COMPANY...companies are in business to MAKE MONEY! No matter what direction ANY company chooses to go in, there will always be a group of people who are unhappy with the decision. (You can't make everyone happy all of the time...that's just life.) As for Pleasure Island...that place had needed a good refurbishing for many years. It is really beginning to look shabby. I used to go to Pleasure Island when I was in college...when it was pretty much for older teens/adults only. I'm much older now. I've certainly changed, but PI looks the same! Welcome the changes...pleasure island has definitely become more FAMILY friendly...which is a great thing.

Ok people, I'm about to eat my words.LOL Believe it or not I received a postcard in the mail today from none other than DISNEY! It was concerning the refurbishment of Pleasure Island and how it will affect those of us who have hopper passes. (hopper passes allow you to go to all the different parks with one ticket...and as an added bonus, it also allows you some days into the water parks, quest, and pleasure island) Since various PI places will be closing, the postcard says that Disney will allow hopper pass people to replace their PI days with GOLF...not putt-putt golf, but 18-hole golf on one of their courses. Now, I, myself am a golfer (only a few times at Disney since it's costly and somewhat impossible to get a decent tee time), but my children are NOT golfers (atleast not good enough to play with the 'big guys'). How does Disney feel that the opportunity to play golf on their course is an equal replacement for PI? Granted, the kids can't go into some of the establishments in PI anyway, but there are some family establishments they are welcome in. I realize Disney doesn't have to give us 'hoppers' ANYTHING AT ALL for the inconvenience. I'm just saying....if they are going to play the 'generosity card', why not play it so that it can benefit EVERYONE and not a select few? How about adding another day to the waterpark or to quest for those who would prefer it? Just a thought. Anyhoo, we are heading down there the beginning of August for a few days. I'll let you all know if we can convince them to replace our PI days with something else, seeing as we have many day passes left to PI that we would love to be able to use someplace else in the near future.

I thought it said Pleasure Island closes September 27th?
so it should still be open the beginning of August

we go before then but we don't usually go to Pleasure
Island (I did like the Adventurer's Club though)

The changes they are planning don't sound very interesting
to me though. Doesn't sound like anything fun :(

A money making scheme? Um well... Disney has to make money. Why do you think you pay money to get into DisneyLand? That's why you pay for food, special passes, hotels and flights. It couldn't exist without making money and making some people unhappy! And PI has needed refurbishing for YEARS.
